Why Do Races and Competitions Have 1st; 2nd and 3rd Prizes?

The practice is the result of a silversmith’s inability to satisfy his customer.   In the early 17th Century in Chester , England, the sheriff agreed to proved a silver trophy for a horse race and contracted with a silversmith to do the work.  The silversmiths first trophy was unacceptable;e and he was sent to give it another try.  The second trophy was unsatisfactory and the silversmith was sent back to have another try for the third time.  The third time was the charm but  now the sheriff had three trophies instead of one.  Not to be wasteful the sheriff decided to award trophies to the first, second and third place winners!
