Tour The All New Muskoka Cranberry Route, Just In Time For Cranberry Harvest

Hop on the Muskoka Cranberry Route, a fun-filled (and delicious) culinary trail inspired by Muskoka’s beloved cranberry. Restaurants, bakeries, breweries, and shops across Muskoka have all drawn inspiration from the area’s famous cranberries, and the route pulls this collection together to showcase our local food and talent.
The new Muskoka Cranberry Route launched officially September 22 – the same day harvesting of Johnston’s cranberries began at Muskoka Lakes Farm and Winery in Bala. The idea to create a Cranberry Route resulted from a partnership between the Farm, Bala Cranberry Festival, Muskoka Tourism Marketing Agency, the Muskoka Lakes Chamber of Commerce and the Township of Muskoka Lakes. While Bala is well known as the Cranberry Capital of Ontario, businesses across Muskoka are taking part in celebrating Muskoka’s local berry.
Randy Brown of Cottage Cravings Café and Gift Shop says his Bala store always has something cranberry in stock and he was one of the first to jump on board the new Route.
“All of our residents have embraced this tart treat and Cottage Cravings is no exception,” says Brown. “And the very idea of almost 30 businesses working together shows a wonderful commitment to the Muskoka Lakes area.” At Cottage Cravings, you can try their cranberry tarts, oatmeal cranberry and white chocolate chip cookies and cranberry frozen yogurt – offered year-round.
How else are cranberries being featured on the Route? Aboard the Peerless II in Port Carling you can sip on a spiced cranberry cider as you cruise and marvel at the fall colours. Just down the road in Minett, The Dining Room at Clevelands House is inviting you to enjoy their delicious Turkey Burger on a Potato Scallion Bun, topped with baby spinach, goat cheese, grilled apple and a cranberry chutney. JW Marriott The Rosseau Muskoka is infusing the berry into their luxurious spa treatments, where spa guests can sip cranberry cinnamon cider while enjoying a 50-minute Cranberry Sugar Scrub. Vintages Dining Room at Sherwood Inn will tempt your tastebuds with their creative Cranberry Panko Crusted Salmon Filet followed by Johnston’s Cranberry Crème Brûlée, a local take on an old favourite.
Local breweries Sawdust City Brewing Co, Muskoka Brewery and Clear Lake Brewing Co. are all featuring local craft beer brewed with local Bala cranberries. In Bala, the cranberry capital of Ontario, the Moon River Lookout restaurant has a special three course Cranberry Menu that infuses local Johnston’s cranberries into each course. A Field Greens Salad with a Cranberry Vinaigrette starts off your dining experience followed by a choice of either Beer Battered Pickerel & Chips served with their famous cranberry tartar sauce or Cranberry BBQ Chicken & Ribs. For dessert, indulge in a delicious Cranberry Apple Crumble.
Maybe the most creative dish on the route, Rende Italian Eatery in Bracebridge has mastered a Cranberry Lasagna, fresh lasagna made with cranberry Italian sausage in a cranberry cream sauce. You’ve got to try this creative (and absolutely delicious) dish.
Retailers and bakeries are also on the route. What A Bakery inside the What A Convenience Store offers an array of baked goods and foods from orange cranberry loafs and muffins to their popular cranberry chicken meat pies. In Gravenhurst, you’ll find cranberry white chocolate butter tarts and Cranberry Passion Tea at the Wheelhouse Café/Starbucks inside The Shipyards. And for over 30 years, the #1 selling fragranced candles at Rich Hill Candles in Bracebridge has been cranberry!
Of course, every Muskoka Cranberry Route adventure has to include a visit to Muskoka Lakes Farm & Winery to gain a real appreciation for this tart berry native only to North America. Take the Bog to Bottle Discovery Tour, an experience so special it has been designated a Canadian Signature Experience. Wade through the cranberries for that epic ‘Instagram photo in the berries’, one of Muskoka’s coolest fall experiences. And take the harvest home with you with unique finds at the Cranberry Store. Be sure to take home their NEW Cranberry Cider and Cranberry Splash Wine Spritzers!
