‘Take It With A Grain of Salt’

When someone wants to caution you not to believe something too quickly, they might  say “…take it with a grain of salt.”   For the longest time, salt has been believed to possess great purifying powers and Pompey is said to have made it a practice to add a grain of salt to any drink suspected of being poison. From this may have come the idea that one should accept certain suspicious offerings, “..with a grain of salt”…in other words with a measure of caution.  Now you know!
