South Simcoe Police Take to the Streets for Operation: Back To School

Every available South Simcoe Police officer, including Chief Andrew Fletcher, Deputy Chief Robin McElary-Downer and detectives from the Criminal Investigations Bureau were in uniform in school zones today. Part of Operation Back To School, the All Hands On Deck initiative aimed to flood school zones with police to remind drivers that school is back in session.

Police were watching for speed, seat belt use, distracted driving, illegal parking and proper bicycle safety.

“Kids are our most valuable resource”, said Traffic Sergeant Lou Dasilva. “We intend to make our school zones as safe as we possibly can. We will educate drivers and hopefully, they’ll all get the message about safe driving.”

Parents are encouraged to talk to their kids about road safety and to set a good example when driving. Those who live close to school are urged to walk. Walking to school is a healthier alternative that reduces traffic congestion around schools and increases safety.
