RVH and Georgian College partner to clean their campuses for Earth Day

Today Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) and Georgian College partnered for their own Earth Day joint- campus clean up.

Janice Skot, RVH president and CEO, was joined at the Friendship Trail between the two facilities by MaryLynn West-Moynes, Georgian College president and CEO, for the official kick-off of the campus clean up.

At RVH we try to be green and in fact, we were just recognized for our energy and waste conservation efforts with a Silver seal on the Green Hospital Scorecard from the Ontario Hospital Association,” says Skot.  “RVH’s existing green initiatives are many – from lights that automatically shut off in the evening and increased recycling efforts, to most recently changing all the exterior parking lot lighting over to LED bulbs. RVH and Georgian College share a passion to reduce our corporate impact on the environment. Today we are committed to doing a bit more by partnering for this campus clean up, especially in the areas like this Friendship Trail, which are used by staff and students from both organizations.”

During the clean up Skot and West-Moynes donned work gloves and joined staff and students from their respective organizations, picking up garbage and recyclables.

“Every little bit helps. Each wrapper or paper cup we pick up today makes Georgian College and RVH a bit greener. It’s a dirty job, but it reminds us of the responsibility we all have to protect our planet,” says West-Moynes. “It’s fitting that we are here today cleaning up along the walkway that joins our two institutions. We share an important partnership that links us. We are both leading institutions that play major roles for the betterment of our regional communities. From Georgian’s point of view, our partnership brings such invaluable benefits as providing clinical placements for our students, and providing world-leading health care for staff and students alike.”

This is not the first time Georgian and RVH have worked together. Most recently the Georgian College Student Association stepped up to donate $25,000 to RVH’s Hearts & Minds campaign for the new Child and Youth Mental Health Inpatient unit.

“This is yet another example of how we are working together. Truly we are the best of neighbours,” says Skot.
