University of British Columbia softball player Claire Eccles is set to make baseball history this summer. On Tuesday, the Victoria Harbourcats of the West Coast League, a collegiate developmental league comparable to the Cape Cod League in the U.S., announced that Eccles would join their roster as the league’s first female pitcher. Despite playing outfield for UBC softball, Eccles earned the invite to the West Coast League as a pitcher by virtue of her left-handed knuckleball. Eccles had spent four years with the women’s Canadian national baseball team as a pitcher. The Harbourcats’ first home game will be on June 5.
