Orillia Man Who Escaped Police Custody Recaptured Later at City Hall

After a short chase, Orillia OPP have remanded a man who escaped their custody after being arrested earlier in the day.

In the morning on Wednesday, June 6, 2018, officers were dealing with a man who was in custody, when he ran from the detachment. Police say they chased the man on foot into Orillia City Hall. As a precautionary measure, City Hall was immediate placed into lockdown while the OPP Central Region’s Emergency Response Team and a canine team conducted a search of the building.

A short time later, the male was located and taken into custody without incident and the lockdown was lifted. As a result, the man, a 26-year-old from Orillia has been charged with escape lawful custody, in addition to the original charges for which he was arrested earlier that morning. He appeared in court in Barrie for a bail hearing later that day.

The circumstances that led up to this matter are currently under investigation at this time and no further details will be provided.
