On Thursday, October 19, Muskoka Authors Association welcomes author, Karen Smythe. Karen will share the approach she took to re-enter the writing life after a hiatus of several years. She’ll also discuss what inspired her novel, This Side of Sad (Goose Lane Editions, September 2017); describes the artistic challenges she faced—and how she resolved them; and tells us how she moved her manuscript from first draft to publication. After reading an excerpt or two from her novel, Karen will be pleased to answer any questions about her book and/or experiences as an author.
Based in Guelph, Ontario, Karen Smythe is the author of the short-story collection, Stubborn Bones, and Figuring Grief, a ground-breaking analysis of the depiction of mourning in the fiction of Mavis Gallant, Alice Munro, Virginia Woolf, and Edna O’Brien. Her stories have also appeared in Grain, The Fiddlehead, The Antigonish Review, and The Gaspereau Review.
Location: St Thomas Anglican Church, 4 Mary Street, Bracebridge. Doors open at 6:30 pm, Meeting begins at 7 pm.
