Environmental Groups Calling For Higher Targets On Recycling Plastics

Dozens of environmental groups are calling on Canada to set a much higher bar for recycling plastics at home. More than 40 non-governmental organizations urge the Trudeau government to set national targets for how much Canadians should recycle with the aim of getting the recycling rate up from today’s 11 per cent of all plastics, to 85 per cent by 2025. The groups also want Canada to require all single-use plastic items like water bottles and take-out containers to be made of at least 75 per cent recycled material. Estimates show up to 10-million metric tonnes of plastic garbage ends up in the oceans each year. Prime Minister Trudeau wants this week’s G-7 leaders’ summit in Quebec to include the signing of an anti-plastics charter.
