Chuck Berry: The Real King of Rock n’ Roll!

Hearing the news of Chuck Berry’s passing on the weekend was heartbreaking…for me and millions of us who loved his music and the man. His list of hit songs is monumental…and what songs…heartbreak…dating…cars… school… and classics like ‘Roll Over Beethoven’ and ‘Maybelline’. I had the honour of meeting Chuck a few years ago en route to Las Vegas, via Dallas, Texas, where I changed planes. On boarding the plane, I noticed a thin, handsome man, sitting cross legged with his chin resting on his hand. I stopped-and knew right away….Chuck Berry!! I offered a hand to him. As he shook it I told him how very loved and how much he meant to us…how grateful we are for the music and to never stop. He sincerely thanked me and put his other hand over our clasped hands then with a smile advised me: “Young man, if your’re going to Vegas, leave your money in the hotel safe now!’ We shared a laugh and I headed for my seat . On the way a man stopped me to thank me for speaking to Chuck. It was his tour manager who told me so many people passed by Chuck and to be appreciated by a fan meant a lot to him. After landing in Las Vegas, I saw Chuck…he was guite tall..with his guitar in a soft case strapped across his back, pulling his carry-on suitcase, walking next to his manager. I felt blessed to have met -to me-the Real King of Rock & Roll. He made a huge contribution to a generation finding it’s way. Sadly missed…eternally grateful for the fun and music!
