Best Friends Of 60 Years Discover They Are Actually Brothers Through Ancestry.com

Two men who have been best friends for over 60 years discovered that they are actually brothers after taking a DNA test through Ancestry.com.  Alan Robinson and Walter Macfarlane recently made the discovery after taking a DNA test through family history website Ancestry.com.  But the pair have actually known each other and been friends for the majority of their lives after initially meeting in the sixth grade while growing up in Oahu, Hawaii.  “He was the party-er, I never went to or did any partying in high school,” Macfarlane said.  The two were both born and raised on the island and even played football together at Punahou.    Macfarlane explained that he never knew his father and Robinson was adopted.  “I had a younger brother that I lost when he was 19, so I never had nieces or nephews,” Robinson said.  “I thought I’ll never know my birth mother, I’ll never have any nieces or nephews.”  Over the past few years, Macfarlane searched for answers about his father through the internet and social media, but he didn’t have any luck.  He finally turned to DNA matching websites for families.  “So then we started digging into all the matches he started getting,” Macfarlane’s daughter Cindy Macfarlane-Flores explained.  At the top of the list was a person with the username Robi737 and the test showed they had several matches including identical X chromosomes.  “As a nickname everybody called him Robi and he flew 737s for Aloha Airlines, he was a pilot,” Macfarlane-Flores said of Robinson.   Ironically, Robinson also used Ancestry.com to find out answers about his family.   The two friends then spoke on the phone and figured out they shared the same birth mother.  The two friends turned brothers, who are 15 months apart in age, shared the news with their friends and family.  The two men now are making plans to travel and enjoy retirement together.
